A graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University, she received her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Media. She is currently the President of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Madison branch. A long-time resident of Madison, Berly has a son attending Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken and her daughter is completing her J.D. at Hofstra University Law School.
